St. Mary’s School has a curriculum designed by the school itself that covers grades from Pre-PP to 12th. The faculty manages its design by grade with adaptions in accordance to the following guide:

Every curriculum is periodically revised to promote a sequence and reach through each level. The specific objectives of the curriculum, abilities, and content define the desired development for the students.

 

The multidisciplinary focus guarantees:

  • Curricular sequence and reach
  • Bilingual teaching
  • Provision of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular experiences for the acquisition of knowledge, skill development, and values clarification

 

Some of the innovative curricular practices are:

  • Approximately 75 min. of English and Spanish every day at Pre-School level
  • Approximately 60 min. in every basic material at Elementary and Secondary School
  • Bilingual teaching in Mathematics from Pre-PP

Instructional Program

The training program provides the inclusion of technology as a tool for students, teachers, and parents throughout the educational process. This way, the student’s learning and experiences are elevated. This includes a variety of strategies and activities to promote our goal of giving students an integral education while also acquiring the ability of critical thinking.

Educational Program

The educational program stimulates the student to expand their mental capacity and necessary attitudes to achieve success in their future education and career. One of the main objectives of our educational program is to promote lessons and activities emphasized in the development of cognitive, psychomotor, and affective abilities. The plans are designed with a variety of strategies and methods, also contemplating the use of technological resources. These strategies comply with the necessities of the students, their varying learning styles, and multiple intellectual levels.

Pre-PP to 3rd Grade

Our early education curriculum is diverse with instructive experiences that foster every aspect of growth and physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and moral development.

  • Assembly and everyday experiences in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, reading, and writing.
  • Electives: Physical Education, Art, Computer, and Swimming.
  • Interactive experiences that promote independent creative thinking
  • Activities that build a sense of consciousness and appreciation for the community, and respect for others.

 

Our curriculum follows the standards and expectations of the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico with a focus on the development of abilities and competences of the 21st century.

 

Teachers use teaching techniques and strategies to promote a significant learning in oral and written communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation in every class.

 

The schedule includes hours from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extended hours for supervised studies and after school care start at 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

4th to 9th Grade

The curriculum for Elementary and Middle School is advanced, and includes Spanish, Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Computer. The students from 4th to 6th grade additionally take additional elective courses on Swimming, Music, and Art. At the 6th grade level, every student takes the School Band elective, where they learn the fundamentals of music interpretation of an instrument. The students in 7th grade take an elective course in Art and Comic Design, and the 8th grade students select the elective of their preference among a diverse offer, according to their interests and abilities.

 

Several student organizations, clubs, and sports teams for our Elementary School students include:

  • National Honor Junior Society
  • Big Sisters and Big Brothers
  • Girl Scouts
  • Elementary and High School Choir
  • Recorder Ensemble (4th and 5th grade)
  • Bell Choir: Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced
  • Band: Intermediate and Advanced

10th to 12th Grade

Teachers of every level design curricular and extra-curricular activities such as field trips, investigations, and enriching exercises, while developing abilities in Spanish, English, and Mathematics. Other activities include: Robotics Competitions, Science Laboratories, Science Fair, Goofy Games, Grandparents Day, Costumes Day, Thanksgiving Breakfast, Christmas Program, Puerto Rican Night, Valentine’s Day, Volunteering Community Projects, Sports, Journalism and Oratory, Design, Programming and Installation of the St. Mary’s School Blog, among many more. All of these activities promote abilities to develop critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. They also promote the use of creativity and art among students. Computer courses and workshops are also available on every level to develop their skills, as well as to fulfill requirements in their special projects for other classes; for example, Power Point presentations, Scrapbooking, short films productions, surveys to analyze data, etc. These curricular and extra-curricular activities are designed to promote a holistic development.
